Ympress® Laser is a quality product with additional guarantees, based on good chain cooperation. What do these guarantees mean in practice and how is consistent quality ensured? We talked about it with Jochem Niermeijer, marketing manager of producer Tata Steel.
What makes Ympress Laser such a good quality plate?
"Ympress Laser represents an exceptionally flat plate that is virtually stress-free and of a very consistent high quality. The homogeneous and consistent quality allows the processor to cut the material quickly and nest it efficiently. Also, that consistent quality ensures high repeatability without adjustment in machine settings during further processing. In addition, the material has good formability and good weldability. What is also remarkable is that we as a chain (Tata Steel, the approved Ympress Laser decoilers and MCB) guarantee the quality of the plate."
What does this quality guarantee mean?
"Ympress Laser guarantees the flatness of the sheet, but even more important is the guarantee in processing. We aim for tension-free material so that it can be processed optimally. With Ympress Laser, operations must be right in one. Should the customer experience tension on the material despite our checks, we will take the material back without discussion if required and quickly provide new material. We guarantee the quality of Ympress Laser plates with the entire supply chain. This also means that together we provide technical support or advice as needed."
How can you guarantee tension-free material?
"Internal tension is not something you can measure. We can only ensure that all processes are aimed at preventing internal tension. The quality of the plate is also largely determined by the person who decoiled it. Therefore, we work with selected processors who have to meet additional requirements. MCB is one of them."
"Over the years, the processes have continued to improve.For example, all selected processors regularly run a slit bow test, where they cut a sheet into strips to see if the strips remain flat and have no hidden tension. This is how we determine if the process is stable. The great thing is that at first, this was an imposed requirement from Tata Steel, but now they see the benefits and are even applying it to several products. Because there is cooperation and commitment in the chain for Ympress Laser, the product is also a priority during disruptions and we are keen to solve problems together."
Is the composition of Ympress Laser different from other plate materials?
"For Ympress Laser, there are strict requirements for chemistry. For example, there is less sulfur in the material because sulfur has a bad effect on the ductility of the material. The min/max values of other alloys are also closer together, allowing less deviation in mechanical properties. The cleanest pig iron is used as a base and the exact ingredients added are known. In addition, the coils are always stored under cover so that the surface remains optimal. In short: on all fronts, we go the extra mile for Ympress Laser."
